Spring in Wisconsin always plays a little game with us. One morning looks like winter is finally finished, and the next morning there’s fresh snow on the ground again. Even if we get a few more flakes this week, the reality is that spring is right around the corner. Lawns will be greening up, gardens will be getting planted, and kitchen knives will start seeing a lot more use.
That also means it’s the time of year when people pull tools out of drawers, garages, and workbenches and realize the edges are not what they used to be.
This week there are two convenient opportunities in Sun Prairie to get your blades sharpened while you are already out and about. Sharp On Sight will be sharpening live at both the Sun Prairie Farmers Market and Jung Garden Center, so you can bring your tools, drop them off, and pick them up ready to go.
Below are the details for both events so you can quickly see what works best for your schedule.
Saturday, May 21st
9:00 a.m. until Noon
📍 Location
2598 W Main Street
Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
Sharp On Sight will be sharpening live at the Sun Prairie Farmers Market Saturday morning.
Bring your dull knives or tools with you while you shop the market. Drop them off, browse the vendors, and pick them up shortly afterward freshly sharpened.
Sunday, March 22nd
10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
📍 Location
Jung Garden Center
1123 N Bristol Street
Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
The second event focuses on spring yard and garden tools. As the gardening season approaches, this is a great time to get pruners, hedge shears, and lawn equipment blades sharpened before the yard work begins.
Sharp tools make a noticeable difference. Pruners cut branches cleanly instead of crushing them, and a freshly sharpened lawnmower blade cuts grass cleanly rather than tearing it.
Because this is a portable live sharpening setup, gas powered tools cannot be serviced during the event.
This means items such as:
Chainsaws
Gas powered hedge trimmers
Large gas powered landscaping equipment
cannot be sharpened on site.
Most manual garden tools, mower blades, knives, and scissors can absolutely be sharpened during the event.
If you are coming to the Sun Prairie Farmers Market, the following items are commonly brought in for sharpening:
Kitchen knives
Chef knives
Paring knives
Santoku knives
Utility knives
Bread knives and serrated knives
Pocket knives
Hunting knives
Plain edge knives
Scissors
Kitchen shears
Fabric scissors
Pinking shears
Rotary cutters
Salon and barber shears
Pet grooming scissors
Clipper blades
Woodworking chisels
Hand tools
Yard tools
One thing many people do not realize is that serrated knives can often be restored rather than replaced. As serrations wear down over time, the scallops can be reestablished so the knife cuts properly again.
Many people continue using tools long after the edge has worn down. Because it happens gradually, the change often goes unnoticed until the tool becomes frustrating to use.
A dull knife requires more force when cutting food, which increases the chance of slipping. A properly sharpened knife bites immediately and cuts smoothly with far less effort.
The same thing happens with yard tools.
A dull lawnmower blade tears grass instead of slicing it cleanly. That tearing can leave grass tips brown and stressed. A sharpened blade makes a clean cut that helps lawns stay healthier.
Garden pruners and loppers also perform much better with a sharp edge. Instead of crushing stems, they slice cleanly through branches, which is easier on both the tool and the plant.
Professional sharpening restores the edge of a blade, but a little maintenance can help keep tools working longer between sharpenings.
For kitchen knives, occasional honing with a ceramic rod helps keep the cutting edge aligned and working smoothly.
For yard tools, wiping blades clean after use and applying a small amount of oil can prevent rust and preserve the edge.
Eventually every blade needs proper sharpening again, but those simple habits can extend the time between sharpenings.
Two Opportunities This Week
If you have tools sitting in a drawer, toolbox, or garage that are no longer cutting the way they should, this week provides two easy chances to take care of it.
Sun Prairie Farmers Market

Even if Wisconsin gives us one more round of snow this week, spring is coming quickly. Getting your tools sharpened now means you will be ready when the warmer weather settles in.
Stop by either event, bring something dull, and leave with an edge that works the way it should.
