Sharpening lawn mower blades with a bench grinder is one of the fastest ways to restore a worn cutting edge. The basic process is simple, but getting a consistent angle from one pass to the next is where things can become frustrating.

Fortunately, your bench grinder may already have the solution built into it.

By positioning the grinder's tool rest so it supports the mower blade near its existing bevel angle, you can turn a basic bench grinder into a surprisingly repeatable mower blade sharpening setup.

Once that angle is established, the process becomes almost a pull through operation. Rest the blade against the guide, bring the bevel into contact with the grinding wheel, and smoothly draw the cutting edge across the wheel.

There is very little setup time, and once you find the right position, subsequent passes become considerably easier to repeat.

Use the Existing Mower Blade Bevel as Your Guide

You generally do not need to create a completely new sharpening angle.

Start by looking at the bevel already ground into the mower blade.

Unless the blade has been badly damaged or sharpened incorrectly in the past, the factory bevel gives you a good reference for how the cutting edge should meet the grinding wheel.

A permanent marker can make this easier.

Color a section of the bevel, make a very light pass on the grinder, and look at where the marker disappears.

If you're grinding only along the very tip of the cutting edge, your angle may be too steep.

If you're removing material primarily from the upper shoulder of the bevel, the angle may be too shallow.

Adjust the tool rest until the grinding wheel contacts the existing bevel reasonably evenly.

You are not trying to achieve laboratory precision here. A lawn mower blade lives underneath a mower where it encounters grass, dirt, sand, sticks, and plenty of other abuse.

The goal is a clean and consistent cutting edge.

Let the Bench Grinder Tool Rest Control the Angle

If you watch people sharpen lawn mower blades on a bench grinder, you'll see several variations of the same basic technique.

Doublewide6 Repairs LLC on Youtube demonstrates placing the mower blade on the grinder's tool rest and moving it straight across the grinding wheel.

High Ridge Handyman demonstrates a similar approach while visually following the blade's existing bevel and sliding the blade across the wheel. He also emphasizes using a firm grip and light pressure rather than forcing the blade into the grinder.

Both approaches work.

But there's an opportunity to make the process even more repeatable.

Instead of treating the tool rest as simply a place to support the blade, adjust it so the blade naturally meets the grinding wheel near its existing bevel.

Once you find that position, tighten the rest securely.

Now the tool rest is doing more than holding the weight of the blade. It is helping you reproduce the sharpening angle every time you make a pass.

That is especially helpful if you only sharpen mower blades periodically. You do not have to rely completely on muscle memory to maintain the same angle.

Once the Angle Is Set, Keep Every Pass Consistent

With the tool rest positioned correctly, place the mower blade against it and bring the cutting edge into light contact with the wheel.

Then smoothly pull the blade across the grinding surface.

Keep the blade moving.

Do not stop and grind one particular section unless you're deliberately repairing localized damage.

Think of the process as pulling the cutting edge through a fixed sharpening position.

The tool rest helps establish the angle while your hands control the movement and pressure.

Several light passes are usually better than one aggressive pass.

After a few passes, stop and look at the edge.

You'll quickly see which sections are being contacted and which areas still need work.

That final light pass is a useful finishing technique once the majority of the sharpening is complete.

Don't Remove Half the Blade Just to Eliminate One Nick

A mower blade may have one deep nick where it struck a stone or another hard object.

It can be tempting to grind the entire cutting edge backward until every trace of that nick disappears.

But think about what that requires.

If the deepest part of the nick extends significantly into the blade, you have to remove that much material from the entire surrounding edge just to make everything perfectly even again.

That may be unnecessary.

If the blade is otherwise serviceable, leaving a small portion of a deep nick can sometimes be preferable to removing a large amount of perfectly good steel.

A mower blade does not need to look brand new to work effectively.

The objective is to restore the majority of the cutting edge while preserving as much useful blade material as possible.

Of course, severe cracks, bending, excessive erosion, or structural damage are different matters. A questionable blade should be replaced rather than aggressively ground in an attempt to save it.

Let the Grinding Wheel Do the Work

One piece of advice shared by both sharpening demonstrations is worth emphasizing: don't force the blade into the grinder.

High Ridge Handyman specifically warns against applying so much pressure that the grinder motor begins to bog down.

That's a good indicator that you're pushing far harder than necessary.

The abrasive wheel should be doing the cutting.

Use light pressure and maintain steady movement.

Heavy pressure has several disadvantages.

It makes controlling the blade more difficult, removes steel faster than necessary, and generates substantially more heat.

A mower blade is relatively thick, but the actual cutting edge can heat quickly.

Keep the Blade Moving to Control Heat

Heat deserves particular attention when sharpening lawn mower blades with a bench grinder.

Doublewide6 specifically points out that concentrating too much grinding in one area can overheat the steel. His recommendation is simple: keep the blade moving across the wheel.

That's another reason the pull through technique works well.

You're continuously moving the blade instead of holding one small section against the grinding wheel.

If you notice significant discoloration developing near the edge, back off and allow the blade to cool.

You shouldn't need huge amounts of pressure or prolonged grinding to restore a normal mower blade.

Sharp abrasives, light pressure, and controlled passes are much more effective than trying to force your way through the sharpening process.

The Backside Is for Deburring, Not Creating Another Edge

After sharpening the primary bevel, you will often feel a small burr along the backside of the cutting edge.

That burr should be removed.

But there is an important distinction between removing a burr and sharpening a second bevel.

Doublewide6 demonstrates a very light backside pass specifically to knock the burr off, followed by another light pass on the primary bevel.

That is the approach I prefer. Or use a brass brush by hand.

You want to preserve the basic geometry of the mower blade.

After sharpening the beveled side, lightly remove the burr from the flat side.

You should not need to grind aggressively.

High Ridge Handyman also makes backside passes during his sharpening process, although his explanation leans more toward sharpening that backside.

I would keep this part conservative.

Think of the backside pass as cleanup rather than additional sharpening.

How Sharp Should a Lawn Mower Blade Be?

A mower blade does not need to shave hair.

It needs a clean and reasonably consistent cutting edge.

Making the edge excessively thin can actually work against you because mower blades operate in a very abrasive environment.

Grass isn't the only thing passing underneath the mower.

There's also soil, sand, sticks, small stones, and other debris.

A durable edge is generally more useful than an extremely thin razor edge.

Once the rounded portion of the old edge is gone and you've established a clean bevel, you are probably much closer to finished than you think.

Doublewide6 makes another good observation in his video: the finished edge does not necessarily have to look exactly like a factory sharpened blade.

Minor grinder marks are largely cosmetic.

A consistent, sharp, balanced blade is far more important than creating a perfectly polished appearance.

Always Check the Blade for Balance

Sharpening removes steel.

If you remove significantly more material from one end of the blade than the other, the mower blade can become unbalanced.

Both Doublewide6 Repairs LLC and High Ridge Handyman devote time to checking blade balance, which tells you how important this step really is. High Ridge Handyman explains that removing more steel from one side can create vibration once the blade begins rotating at mower operating speed.

A dedicated mower blade balancer makes checking balance simple.

Place the center hole of the blade on the balancer and watch what happens.

If one side consistently falls downward, that side is heavier.

Remove a small amount of material from the heavier end and check the balance again.

Doublewide6 demonstrates another simple option using a screwdriver held horizontally from a vise.

The concept is the same.

If the blade remains relatively level rather than continually rotating toward one side, the blade is reasonably balanced.

The important thing is not the particular balancing tool.

The important thing is actually checking..

Clean and Repaint the Blade Before Reinstallation

Once the sharpening and balancing are finished, there is one more step that is easy to overlook.

Protect the steel.

Sharpening, cleaning, and removing corrosion frequently exposes bare metal.

That bare steel is about to go directly back underneath a lawn mower.

Mower blades operate around wet grass, weeds, plant juices, dirt, morning dew, and other moisture.

That's an excellent environment for rust.

Before reinstalling the blade, clean away loose rust and flaking paint.

Degrease the surface thoroughly.

I prefer using a durable high heat spray paint on the exposed areas of the blade. It creates a protective coating that helps keep moisture away from the steel.

Follow the paint manufacturer's instructions regarding preparation, application, drying, and curing.

You don't need to bury the newly sharpened cutting edge underneath heavy coats of paint.

The objective is primarily to protect the body of the blade and other exposed steel.

Paint will eventually wear away again underneath a mower, but restoring the protective coating can help slow corrosion between sharpenings.

Bench Grinder vs. Drill Mounted Mower Blade Sharpeners

High Ridge Handyman also compares his bench grinder with one of the inexpensive mower blade sharpening stones that attaches to a drill.

The drill attachment works, but it takes considerably more passes. In his comparison, he ultimately concludes that the bench grinder produces the better edge more quickly.

For someone who sharpens one mower blade occasionally and doesn't own a grinder, a drill attachment may be perfectly adequate.

But if you already own a bench grinder, there's a good chance you already have the better sharpening setup.

Spend a few minutes adjusting the tool rest instead of purchasing another sharpening tool.

Once the angle is established, future mower blade sharpenings can become very quick.

The process can be kept fairly simple:

  1. Safely disable the mower and remove the blade.
